Public safety agencies commonly suggest keeping a kit that can support your household for about three days. Adjust this list to your family and location.

Water and food

Store water for drinking and basic hygiene and non-perishable food that needs little or no cooking.

Light and communication

Keep a flashlight, spare batteries, a battery or hand-crank radio and phone chargers or power banks.

First aid and medicine

Include a first-aid kit and a supply of any regular prescription medicines, as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.

Documents and cash

Keep copies of important documents and some cash in a waterproof container.

Tools and warmth

Add a multi-tool, blankets, weather-appropriate clothing and a whistle.

Review twice a year

Check expiry dates and update the contents when your household changes.

Quick checklist

  • Is water stored?
  • Are batteries fresh?
  • Are documents copied?
