Start a WordPress Website: A Step-by-Step Checklist

A beginner checklist covering domain, hosting, installation, essential pages and first settings for a new WordPress site.

General information only, last updated October 2026. This page may link to reviews that contain affiliate links; see our disclosure.

Launching a first WordPress site involves a handful of repeatable steps. Use this checklist to keep them in order.

1. Choose a domain name

Pick a name that is short, easy to spell and relevant to your topic. Check that it is available and consider the renewal cost.

2. Choose hosting

Select a plan that includes SSL and WordPress installation support. Compare renewal prices before buying.

3. Install WordPress and secure it

Most hosts offer a guided installer. After installing, set a strong admin password, remove unused themes and plugins, and enable automatic updates where available.

4. Add the essential pages

Create an About page, a Contact page, a Privacy Policy and, if you earn commissions, an affiliate disclosure. These pages build trust and are expected by visitors and advertising platforms.

5. Set up backups

Turn on regular backups and test a restore once. A backup you have never restored is only a guess.

6. Publish and review

Check the site on a phone, test every link and form, and confirm the site loads over HTTPS.

Quick checklist

  • Is HTTPS working on every page?
  • Do all links and forms work?
  • Are backups scheduled?
  • Is a privacy policy published?
